What is the "GESY"?

The term "GESY" refers to the statutory health insurance system in Cyprus, which is strongly based on the social system in Greece. Only since 2019 has there been a statutory health insurance fund in Cyprus, into which all employed citizens of Cyprus pay. Due to its young age, the health care system is still in the start-up phase, which is why the benefits differ greatly from the German health care system. Expats but also citizens can take out private insurance internationally to get additional protection in Cyprus as well as in other countries.

Services of general practitioners are covered, the costs of specialists are borne after referral by the permanently assigned general practitioner. Births have also been paid for since 2021. However, all dental services, alternative healing methods such as acupuncture, osteopathy or physiotherapy must be paid for privately. The numerous private hospitals can also only be used in conjunction with private insurance.
